Poetry/Theatre Masterclass with reg e gaines

Explore poetry and performance in this transdisciplinary masterclass with Newark Symphony Hall artist-in-residence reg e gaines.

Participants will work on techniques which will enhance their ability to turn any text to Spoken Melodies. Session will focus on articulation, projection, imagery, alliteration and rhyme schemes.

  • Ages: 11-19 / Grades 7-12
  • Skill/experience level: Open
  • Materials: None. However, students should know by heart at least one verse from a poem, song or rap lyric. The more they know, the easier to understand and learn the technical aspects of poetry/theater. There is an example haiku (PDF and audio recording) below.

Students do not need to be registered for the New Jersey Youth Poet Laureate competition to participate. Participation will not affect student success in the competition.

reg e gaines is a poet, playwright, director, lecturer and Artistic Director of the Downtown Urban Arts Festival in New York City since 2007. This two time Tony Award nominated playwright and Grammy nominated lyricist is author of the Tony Award winning musical, Bring in da Noise/ Bring in da Funk. reg is author of four books of poetry including, The Original Buckwheat and Abstract Sax, is a former Nuyorican Poets Cafe Grand Slam Champ and appears in numerous poetry anthologies including, Bum Rush The Page, Paterson Literary Review, Aloud: Voices From The Nuyorican Poets Cafe, and A Year in Ink. reg recorded two poetry albums, Please Don’t Take My Air Jordans and Sweeper Don’t Clean My Streets, for Mercury Records.
